As you can see on https://www.rodo.com/lease-or-buy-new-bmw, there are a lot of BMW models available to be bought or leased already but BMW always want to make their vehicles bigger and better so they’ve revealed a new model in New York. The 2013 BMW 6-series Gran Coupe made its debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show and is now making its US debut. It is being marketed as a 4-door coupe and will rival cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Audi A7 and the Porsche Panamera. It was designed to appeal to 6-series customers who want an elegant grand tourer, but also want room and comfort for four.
At first look, I didn’t think the Gran Coupe looked too coupe-like. But then I looked at the new M6 coupe that was right next to it and I was able to better understand its coupe-like shape. I had to imagine removing the rear passenger section just behind the b-pillar and in front of the rear quarter window divider. Once I did this, I realized the car would pretty much be a dead ringer for the coupe. The 6-Series Gran Coupe also has frameless door windows, another trait that is more typically found in coupes.
The flat paint is attractive, and different, but it requires some extra care when washing and therefore can’t be run through a car wash. The rear tail lights are full LED, and there is a wide third brake light that spans above the rear window.
It’s grip comes from 18″ alloys wheels with 245/45 all season run flat tires that allow you to drive on a flat for up to 150 miles at reduced speeds, so you don’t have to stop in an unsafe area to change a tire or wait for roadside assistance. Braking comes from 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes.
The quality of the materials in the interior is top notch. The styling is very elegant and upscale, and the rear is luxurious for two. BMW calls it a 4+1 seater with amenities for up to five passengers. The center console is stretched to the rear giving the impression of added length, but hinders legroom for the middle rear occupant. When I tried sitting in the middle, my head was hitting the roof and I had no place for my legs. It’s useless for adults. However, the two side seats in the rear are very comfortable for two, which is a huge improvement over the inhospitable rear seat of the coupe.
The 640i Gran Coupe is rear wheel drive and is powered by BMWs TwinPower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that’s rated at about 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque from 1,300 – 4,500 RPM. It comes with an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission with Driving Dynamics Control, automatic Sport and Manual shift modes, and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. BMW claims the 640i Gran Coupe will accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 5.4 seconds. It weighs 4,191 pounds, so it’s not a lightweight. MSRP is $76,895, including destination and will go on sale this summer.
Later in the summer, BMW will add the 650i Gran Coupe powered by BMW’s sweet TwinPower turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes about 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Prices will start at $87,395 including destination. BMW will also offer an xDrive all-wheel-drive version of the 650i Gran Coupe. Prices for this model will start at $90,395 including destination.
Last summer, I drove the 650i Convertible and loved it. Despite its extra length, I have no doubt that the driving experience of the 6-Series Gran Coupe will be very similar, but now you can enjoy it with more passengers than before.
